The DeafBlind Graduate Certificate Initiative will provide funding assistance to qualified candidates through a grant from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to cover tuition and fees for online courses needed for the DeafBlind Graduate Certificate.

Complete the Application

Graduate Certificate in Deafblindness (15 Hours)

  • EDSP 5383: Anatomy and Functions of the Visual System (Requires 1 weekend in Lubbock)
  • EDSP 5388: Programs & Services for Individuals with Deafblindness
  • EDSP 5389: Strategies for Students with Multiple Disabilities and Visual Impairments or Deafblindness
  • EDSP 5394: Communication for Students with Deafblindness
  • EDSP 5395: Anatomy and Functions of the Auditory System for Students with Deafblindness

Applicants must have computer and internet access and must acknowledge that, if awarded funding, they will:

  1. Apply new knowledge to their work with students who are DeafBlind in the state of Texas; and
  2. Will provide any follow-up information requested from the Texas Sensory Support Network (TXSSN), Texas Tech University (TTU) and/or TEA.

Participants will be responsible for books and travel related costs. 

Application Process

Complete the following application steps:

  1. Apply to TTU Graduate School 
    1. DeafBlind Certificate Program
    2. Pay application Fee: $65 (non-refundable and not covered by grant monies.)
  2. Apply to the DeafBlind Graduate Certificate Initiative Program through the Texas Sensory Support Network (TxSSN) at ESC Region 11 by completing the online application.

Upon acceptance to the Graduate School and the DeafBlind Graduate Certificate Initiative, an advisor will contact you to develop an appropriate plan of study.

Students who are already certified as a Teacher of Visually Impaired (TVI) or Teacher of Deaf/Hard of Hearing (TODHH) may be able to take fewer courses to get the DeafBlind Graduate Certificate.

Applications are accepted throughout the year, but there are deadlines for consideration: June 1 for the fall semester, November 1 for the spring semester, and April 1 for the summer semester.

Texas Tech University may accept successfully completed coursework as credit toward a Master’s Degree in Special Education.
